Food in the 1900’s to the 1914’s

Food in the 1900’s to the 1914’s became fancier. There were desserts, dressings, snacks, and candies. The people took the basics of meat, fruits, and vegetables and added on with the new things they had. In the 1900’s, technology was also advancing, leading to many varieties of food. With more food being made, it was appreciated more and led to more creativity.

More desserts were being created, like animal crackers, peanut butter, jelly, and syrup. All of these are still present today. It is interesting how these foods from the 1900’s is still almost exactly the same today. Although it seemed as if food was making great progress, there were still negative aspects to it. In Upton Sinclair’s book, The Jungle,  the meat packing industry was poorly displayed. It was very unsanitary and unhealthy. Most of the meat was processed from things that people didn’t even know of. With food quickly advancing, it also created lots of processed foods that were largely unhealthy.

A common food that was created in 1905 and is very popular now is pizza. It originally started in New York and later quickly spread. The ingredients that were used were cheese from cows, majoram herbs, tomatoes, and flour. When it was first made, it was shaped into a pie. Later, the pie as flattened into a sheet. Before World War II, pizza was not very popular, but after the war, the American GI’s brought home pizza and the food quickly spread. Pizza as we know it dates all the way back to 1905 and it is amazing how we have held onto the idea.

As technology like refrigeration and ovens advanced, so did food.  Most of the foods made in the 1900’s are still around today. However, not everything was good. As described in The Jungle, there were many health problems with food. Some foods were unsanitary and led to diseases. Another problem was obesity. However, although these problems are bad, it has shaped American culture to the way it is now.
