American Food in 1750-1850

By the 1750, the colonies in America had successfully settled despite the fact that there were many unfavorable conditions on their new continent. Unfortunately, the French & Indian War began in 1744 to 1763. Colonies had to support their husbands and their sons and even the British armies. Colonies that were engaging in the war struggled again to overcome another shortage of foods. However, the war ends with the British & Colonies’ winning and France signed the Treaty of Paris to acknowledge the sovereignty of the colonies in America. Therefore the colonies’ elevated status and pride led them to grow a desire for an independence from Great Britain. Hence, this fact made them to turn their eyes to the more rich diets.

          After France moved to the north part of the continent of America, the trading between colonies and Britain invigorated conspicuously. The English East India Company, which was monopolizing the trading imports, traded their manufactured goods, salt, and molasses from England and its huge overseas colonies with American colonies’ crops and raw materials. Even though beefs and meats were still expensive for the middle and lower class people, the Chinese tea, salt, and manufactured goods were in the spotlight for the rich people or merchants. Teas and coffees were served as a beverage for parties of upper class people. In fact, by 1765, teas and coffees that were coming from china and Dutch became the most popular beverages in America. Unlike the other goods, the tea influenced the history of America enormously. During the mid of 18th century, the British parliament constantly decided to tax Americans for varieties of goods that were popular in America. Therefore, these continuous unilateral demeanors of the British parliament evoked strong indignations from colonies in America. Ultimately, some group of people from Boston disguised themselves as Native Americans and attacked the two ships that were anchoring at the dock and threw hundreds of boxes of tea into the ocean. This event caused the Boston Massacre and became the immediate root of the Independence War.

                 The way that the American colonies people brew a cup of tea was distinct from the way of Chinese people’s. The original way to make a cup of tea is brew the green tea in pure, and hot water. In addition, the true connoisseur of tea is known as savoring the unique taste and flavor. However, Americans and British people normally put milk to mild its taste, and ice to drink in a hot weather. They enjoyed some different types of teas like green tea, Bohea, Hyson, Gunpowder, Souchong, Bloom, Congou, Pekoe, and Singlo.  The tea bags were not invented until the late 19th century, so it was difficult for the early people to taste its pure flavor.

          The American colonies and the people, who were living, had survived from the varieties of hardships of their new land. While adopting a new way of living from the Native Americans and feeling alienated from their mother England, during 1750-1850, there began several new movements between the colonies after winning the French & Indian war. If the simple and limited styles of diets of colonies’ during 1600-1750 were reflecting the backgrounds of that time period, which was harsh and tough for the settlers, the beginning of the tea culture and seeking for some better foods may considered to be the beginning of the independence from Britain.
